Cathy Carroll
Cathy learned about family business leadership the best way you can – by leading her family’s business. After a distinguished twenty-year corporate career, she took the helm of her father’s business, instantly discovering the unique differences that set leadership in family businesses apart from large corporations.
Cathy is the Founder and President of Legacy Onward, Inc., where she serves as a leadership coach for family business leaders. She is the author of Hug of War: How to Lead a Family Business With both Love and Logic.
Though Cathy grew up surrounded by her grandfather’s business, she initially carved out her career path as an actuary at Hewitt Associates, later progressing to executive roles at Sabre Inc. and United Airlines. In 2009, her father invited her to lead his business as President and COO, where she spearheaded a successful turnaround of five companies that manufacture and distribute sporting goods serving the rodeo market, with a focus on team roping.
In 2013, Cathy founded Legacy Onward, Inc. to provide leadership coaching services to family businesses. She also trains advisors serving in family enterprises as well as coaches who maintain their credential with the International Coaching Federation (ICF).
A sought-after keynote speaker with a global clientele, Cathy is passionate about developing leaders in the complex domain of family businesses.
Cathy holds certificates in both Leadership Coaching and Executive Facilitation from Georgetown University, an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and a BA from Boston College. She is a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) with the ICF and is accredited in The Leadership Circle, Hogan, TetraMap, and Enneagram assessments.
In addition to her professional endeavors, Cathy has served on the boards of several family businesses and non-profit organizations. An active community member, Cathy is currently the Vice-Chair of the Board of the Purposeful Planning Institute and co-founder and Treasurer of A Leg To Stand On, a charity providing prosthetic limbs to children in developing countries. Cathy lives with her family in San Antonio, TX.
